"My skis were rockets!" said Josie Nelson, summing up the experience of the Fast Wax skiers.  They followed the same waxing recommendations that were on the web site:  1 layer of HS-30 Red, 2 layers of HSF-30 Salmon, with Flite #11 over top.  Soft flex skis helped as the new snow on the trail broke down quickly.  Fine to universal grind skis were good, and a light rill was fine, but more structure was not helpful as the snow did not become really wet until mid afternoon.
We had reports of good skis with HSF-20 Tan/Flite #11 out of the first few waves as well.
Summary of the 2004 Birkie:  Lots of happy Fast Wax skiers with fast skis!  Thanks to all who let us know how much they enjoyed their Birkie/Kortie experience.

In addition to the race team we heard from many skiers who earned age group placements and personal best results...more than we can list but we thank you for sharing your Mora experience with us!
Race day arrived without the predicted high humidity and rapid warming that had indicated Tan as a best choice. Some racers who had prepared alternate skis with  HSF-10 Green or Teal found it tested very well & faster than Tan; others found their Tan skis were great.  As almost everyone racing had waxed for the (incorrect) warming forecast, even those who did not find their skis as fast as usual reported that they were at least as fast as everyone else's skis.  Overall a great race and it was wonderful to be back on the Vasaloppet trail again!
*Sidelined at the start with a broken pole, Clay Diggins credited polite fellow skiers and very fast skis for helping him work his way back up to a 22nd place finish.

Although the temperature was warmer than predicted for the evening low,  the snow was still a squeaky dry snow and stayed squeaky until the last 5K of the race when the temperature warmed to 25F and the trail cover opened in the sun.
The Green was great at the start, however, both Randy and Vickie felt thir skis really picked up the the last 5K when the sun hit the trail.
